OCTOBER 9 2025 —The independent game developer Naughty Cow has released a promo of their survival horror game SUFFOCATE, in which they announced that it will be available on Steam on October 23 at 4:00 AM [EDT-4].
SUFFOCATE is a realistic 3D first-person survival horror game. Set in the present day, the plot revolves around family relationships, a mysterious cult, and the greed that permeates human nature. The game doesn’t shy away from violence, gore, faith, and sex in this one-of-a-kind survival horror experience, Taiwanese style. Slowly uncover the horrifying truth and witness what happens when everything goes wrong for a happy family. As the story unfolds, engage in gripping feats of stealth, parkour, and puzzle-solving—not to mention your ability to conquer your deepest fears!
Players will experience conflicts that arise from different characters’ perspectives, all while being chased by angry ghosts that seem…eerily familiar. Advance the plot by exploring, hiding, and solving puzzles, and experience a horror story centered around family relationships.
Inspirations
SUFFOCATE is inspired by a variety of horror games and movies, and referenced important incidents in recent Taiwanese history to design the overarching storyline, such as the “Snails without Shells” movement and the Liu Pang-yu murder, to name just two. Some other inspirations include The Bold, the Corrupt, and the Beautiful, Island of Greed, Double Vision, On Children, The Untold Story, and more.
The player first finds themself in the Lin family residence, which exudes an architectural style popular in Taiwan in the 1980s and 90s. The design reflects the luxurious villas of celebrities and artists commonly seen on Yangming Mountain, and the suburban areas of Beitou and Tianmu.
