There is no general consensus among experts and gaming sites on the genres and sub-genres of computer and video games, thanks in part to the fact that there are so many hybrid categories and so much overlap.

We have also tried to classify games according to how they are playable – for example, Call of Duty 2, although set in World War II, is not a historical game, but a shooting game, because that is how you play it. The setting, the environment and the world you’re in is not relevant information in this context.
However, a game can belong to more than one genre, even on a subjective interpretation: for example, Grand Theft Auto V is by default an open-world action-adventure game in which you can shoot and achieve missions, but you can also shoot in TPS and FPS modes, and develop characters with minimal role-playing elements. Since most of the game is effectively an action-adventure game, since we play it as such, it falls into that category.
